Quarter 2 Week 3
Salvete, Spartanae Familiae!
4th Grade
This past week we talked about verbs and how their endings change to tell us who they are talking about. We used our mini-white boards to practice using our endings and to see how verbs change depending on the person, number, and tense.
Looking ahead: We're talking about word order! Did you know that Latin and English use different word order in their sentences? If you're a native English speaker you don't typically think about what order we say our words, we just say what sounds right- but when you become a Latin scholar we start to ask deep questions about our own language. Why do we speak the way we do? How do other languages order their sentences? How does changing a word's position change its meaning? We'll talk about all this and more in week 4 of 4th grade Latin!
5th Grade
This past week we finished our first vocabulary quiz for quarter 2! We will have another one in the weeks to come, so we'll continue to talk about vocabulary and practice our vocab studying methods that will aid us in our Latin career here at Great Hearts.
Looking ahead:
We'll finish translating our story 'In foro' as we discuss the business of the Roman forums, and we'll start a new story 'Tonsor' about a trip to the barber gone wrong!
6th Grade
This past week we finished translating Gladiatores and practiced some of our new vocabulary with games. We also continued our discussion of Gladiators and life in the Roman arena through the lens of translation. We've discussed different types of Gladiators such as the Retiarii net fighters and the heavily armored Murmillones; and soon we'll translate a fight scene between the two!
Looking ahead:
As mentioned above we'll translate a fight scene straight from the Pompeiian arena! We'll also continue to study our vocabulary in preparation for our second vocabulary quiz Wednesday, November 17th.
We're in the final stretch before Thanksgiving break and its coming up quick. I'm thankful for our scholars and the time I get to spend with them teaching a subject I'm passionate about, it's a small wonder every day to watch them grow- I hope you and your families have a great week!
